The Plex app on my TCL Roku TV has become extremely slow since the update. In my case with a Ryzen 5 1500X and an Nvidia 1660 Super, It takes quite long for the CPU to transcode a 20minute video into H.265, with the Super it takes under 5-10 minutes. Well, using your GPU will offload the CPU from doing the transcoding. Would 264 hardware encoding with the Nvidia encoder be any different than software encoding? Would it cause any compatibility issues? I suggestion you Checkout the Plugins that are already available there and use the one that fits your needs. Though I am more a fan of ffmpeg because it gives you a lot more options that can be changed through a plugin like using a different CRF value depending on the resolution etc. You can also add a preset of your handbrake and use that in tdarr as well. Tdarr can do everything that Handbrake and ffmpeg can do, you just have to configure it. you can checkout Tdarr which can use both handbrake and ffmpeg and also has a lot of plugins for various things that can even change its behaviour depending on what resolution etc the input file has.Ĭan tdarr do 10 bit 265 as a docker with Nvidia? if the bitdepth is at 8bit then you will have to specify that you want 10bit.īy the way, Handbrake is a bit more manual labour unless you have some automatic way of doing that. Best way to check is to make a test transcode and use MediaInfo to check what came out of it. I have to specify if I want 10bit bitdepth (with ffmpeg not handbrake though). Is 265 hvenc hardware encoding 8 bit or 10? If you use Plex and transcode into something that your client cant play then you will have an 'on-the-fly' plex transcode which reduces. The Shield and the FireStick do support H.265 and Kodi is using its own codecs so that should work as well. Sure, you could just transcode everything with the same settings in Handbrake or FFmpeg but to optimize that you might want to have different settings for 480p to 4K content (like much higher bitrate etc). H.265 is not so commonly supported as H.264 is so some clients won't play it without it being transcoded. I have Kodi htpcs now and as they play anything if I were to purchase a shield, Roku or firestick am I going to have a bad time? If you were putting media on a USB storage and plugging it into the Roku to play with the onboard media player, it would matter more, but Plex is doing a lot of the lifting that that point. Source = AC3 5.1 (which is what you should have ripped from your DVD) What's the question Every piece of hardware is becoming irrelevant if you're using Plex and it will transcode the stream for the client.Set Optimise Video = Use Advanced Tab instead.Set Quality = Constant Quality of RF:19.If the movie is 4:3, set Anamorphic = None and ensure Keep Aspect Ratio is checked. If the movie is widescreen or hard letterboxed, set Anamorphic = Strict.Ensure Large File Size and iPod 5G Support are unchecked. In Handbrake, start with the High Profile preset and then make the following changes: These instructions apply to Handbrake 0.9.9. Just in case the Rokoding site disappears, I have reproduced the 480p DVD Settings below in a slightly modified form. Specifically, since most of my source material is DVDs, I use the 480p Original settings. To solve both problems, I have changed from ffmpeg to Handbrake and I am following the encoding guidance of Rokoding. Second, for a yet-undetermined reason, Plex (my current preferred media client) will transcode the videos rather than play them directly. First, the resulting MP4s only include a stereo audio track, so are highly sub-optimal for surround sound systems. I recently encountered two problems with this approach. In a previous post, I noted that I use ffmpeg to convert DVDs to MP4s which will play on my Roku. Update 10:00 PM: See also Using Handbrake to Encode Blu-Rays for the Roku
